Rotation Reflection

My rotation was at Dr. Aranas pediatric office and it was my 9th rotation. I was exposed to different treatment strategies for pediatric patients such as calculating doses. Depending on the ages of the patient, some patients had difficulty to express what their symptoms were. The provider had to rely on the parents/guardian. Many patients were extremely terrified of seeing the provider, blood draws and getting a physical exam. I tried to address these by asking questions and trying to distract the patient from what the provider was doing. I was able to do multiple physical exams and blood draws during this rotation. All though I have done these on previous rotations, doing them again helped me hone these skills. Multiple patients that attended this facility were Spanish speaking. It was difficult to communicate with them but I tried to learn certain words that helped me communicate with them. There was no translation service available, but using sources such as google translate helped me. However, going forward I want to learn Spanish fluently. Majority of the population in the NYC area is Spanish speaking. In order to provide appropriate care learning Spanish is important.
