Self Reflection

My family medicine rotation was at Dr. Devicka Persauds office. Throughout my rotation I did multiple breast exams, EKGs, venipuncture, PPDs and vaccines. I evaluated a variety of patients. I learned treatment strategies related to treated diabetic patients and prescribing different types of birth control. Majority of the patients I saw were West Indian, hence had to learn more about their culture and foods to better help treat the patients. I educated multiple patients on better diet and exercise regimen which is something I had not done as much before. I learned how to better communicate with he patients to help them adhere to it. Unfortunately, due to the rotation being 5 weeks it is difficult to assess how effective my communication was. Regardless, I gained the skill to educate patients throughout this rotation. This would help me in my next upcoming rotations and in my career. A challenge I found on this rotation, is that patients tend to talk about other aspects of their life that are related medicine. It was difficult to interrupt the patients which led me to spending an increased time with the patient. In my future rotation, I will try to respond to the patients but simultaneously ask a question to direct the conversation towards medicine.
